Pre-Kindergarten Program

Our goal in our developmentally appropriate kindergarten readiness program is to make learning exciting and joyful; as well as, to “accept all children where they are and take them forward on their literacy journey.”

Is your child ready for kindergarten?

  • Will your child turn five in late summer or fall?
  • Are you worried your child may not be ready for Kindergarten and are undecided about keeping him/her out one more year?
  • Do you want your child exposed to activities which promote reading and math readiness skills?

If you answered yes to any of these questions —you may want to consider our program.

Kindergarten yesterday and today

Twenty years ago it was popular to offer a 2 year developmental Kindergarten program for younger Kindergarten students. Budget cuts came along and most of these programs were eliminated. Today, the Kindergarten curriculum is much more rigorous but the developmental Kindergarten has not returned.

Our developmental program offers an alternative to a preschool play program and a preparatory class for the rigorous Kindergarten programs.

Reading Curriculum

Multi-level instruction combined with multi-sensory experiences provide a foundation for learning to read and write.

  • Phonemic Awareness
  • Language Concepts
  • Print concepts
  • Letter ID / Sounds
  • Vocabulary
  • Introduction to Kindergarten Sight words
  • Shared Reading / Writing
  • Comprehension Skills
  • Beginning reading as appropriate
  • Introduction to printing name, alphabet letters, word
  • Comprehension Skills

What is phonemic awareness?

It is the ability to notice, think about, and work with the individual sounds in spoken words. Before children learn to read print, they need to become aware of how sounds in words work. They must understand that words are made up of speech sounds or phonemes

Math Curriculum

Using the program, Math Their Way and teacher prepared materials, children will develop understanding and insight of the patterns of mathematics using concrete materials. Abstract concepts are introduced using real materials so children can experience a concept concretely and perceive it visually.

  • Patterning
  • Sorting / classifying
  • Counting
  • Comparing
  • Graphing
  • Number Concepts

Assessments

Assessments for each child, in the areas of math and reading, will be on-going. You will be able to see the growth your child has made and will be able to give this information to your child’s Kindergarten teacher at the beginning of the traditional school year.

Assessment includes

  • One-on-one assessment with specific emphasis on phonemic awareness
  • End of the year parent conference
